170 minutes: lord of the flies, chapter 5-8

reading focus

my reading focus is loss of innocence. I think that there are many ways you can look at this. you can look at it in the way of them growing up, or in the way of their actions almost going from being innocent and civil, to becoming savage.

the loss of innocence that i have been noticing it them becoming more savage. they are changing from being proper boys to become savage children that live on an island alone. they are having to grow up and fast.

in the begging of the book, the boys try and kill a pig but get scared. i think this is loss of innocence because they had never thought of killing an animal before and now thats the only thing they can do to survive. another way they are loosing their innocence is how they treat each other. at first they were all nice to one another and now they are hurting each other physically and mentally.

Major Units Of Study

i think that major units of study so far have included alot about literacy narratives, short stories, literary analysis, and lord of the flies.

we learned about many things that have to do with all of the things put together like writing tips and literary elements. We have also focused on how to become better writers. I find that the skills in this class are skills that we will use for the rest of our lives and they are good skills to have.

books i have read this semester

lord of the flies
one day
a stolen life

i have learned that i really like autobiography books more than other genres. i find them interesting and read them faster than other genres. I already knew but still agree that i am not a very passionate reader and dont really enjoy reading all that much. as much as i wish i did, i do not.

by the end of next semester, i would like to have read at lease 5-7 books. for me this would be a great accomplishment. i want to look at other genres and not run away from books because they look long and scary. I want to read a book that i once thought was long and scary so i can prove to myself that i can do and read anything i put my mind to.

chapter 2 page 38: "like kids" he said scornfully, "acting like a crowd of kids"- important because piggy is calling the group a bunch of kids but he himself is a kid too

chapter 5 page 92: "who cares what you believe in fatty", "i got the conch"- important because when they first got to the island, the boys respected the rules and followed them closely, but now they dont care about the rules and dont follow them

LOTF reading response

the first chapter of this book revealed alot of how the book will go on and how it will be written. Some parts were kindof hard to understand in terms of knowing who was being talked about or who was talking because sometimes the pronouns werent very clear. i think that i will enjoy this book because from the start it caught my attention and didnt have very many parts that were dragging on and hard to read. I am excited to get deeper into the book and hopefully get some more of my questions answered.

Plance Crash Activity

I think that our class didnt handle the place crash activity very well. We were all fighting and were all over the place. We couldn't make any decisions and couldnt even choose a leader. Some people left our group and made their own because we werent getting anything done. I think that it wouldve worked better if one person wouldve stepped up and took control so that there wouldve been at least some sort of structure to built on.

Addictions,
everybody has that one thing that theyre addicted to, wether its a TV show, or whatever, its an addiction. I have to admit that I have one, a bad one, ..... Im addicted to greys anatomy. Like seriously addicted. I will spend countless hours in my room watching it, o one can stop me. I have seen every season at least 3 times and still rewatch them whenever i can! i cant stop! sometimes it gets in the way of my school work because i watch it instead of doing homework but i cant help it! it makes me happy to watch it! it is what i want my future to be like, i want to model my future after it. I want to be a doctor.

Reading Response

I enjoyed reading other short stories than the ones we read together because I got to experience what other short stories looked like. Also I got to interpret them on my own without the input from other classmates. I read them at my own pace and annotated them for what I wanted. I think that it helped me as a reader because I had to figure out what as important and what was showing what in the story on my own.

The Sniper

For my three short stories I read Hills Like White Elephants, The Sniper, and The Return.
In The Sniper i noticed that most of the story has to do with the setting. When things happen in the story happen because of the setting and it adds to the suspense and action of the story.

for my thesis, i want to focus on the setting of the story and how it affects the outcome of the story. I want to show how where they are and where they go adds to the rising and falling action. the rising action is shown by location and the falling action is shown how the sky and places around him get dark and gloomy.

I Am A Writer Who

I am a writer who likes to write about random things. I like to write about what I am feeling at a certain moment. Most of the time when I go back and read what I wrote it doesn't make any sense at all, but while writing it, it makes all the sense in the world. My thoughts flow randomly and normally don't go together but I just write whatever comes into my head. It helps me relax just to talk about my feelings to myself, just to get them out. I like being this kind of reader because I can get   things off my mind easily and feel better at the end.

Reading Response

In the book I am reading now One Day, there is a very definite plot structure. The eposition is pretty short then leads into the rising action. The rising action lasts for a while before slowly growing into the climax. There is not really a definite climax, but  long section of the book is where the climax pice by piece takes place. The falling action is pretty short because the book keeps reliving a moment year after year so it keeps happening, but towards the end things start to slow down which could be considered the falling action.

Free Post

There are so many demands on teens these days. We have to do our homework, participate in school activities, sports, grades, and keep up with our social lives all at the same time! How we balance it all is a mystery but somehow we manage it everyday of our lives.
When we wake up we have to get ready, while responding to the text you just got, and trying to make sure we have everything we will need that day. Throughout the day you are constantly talking to your friends about weekend plans while also trying to pay attention in class. We have very complex minds that help us get through what we need to with the power of multitasking. Without it, we would not be able to do the things we want and need to be dont.

Reading Response

Working on my literacy narrative at first was hard because I couldn't find a topic that I wanted to write about but after I found what I wanted to write about it became easier and easier. Every time I write a draft I find more and more things that I can change and improve.
In the process of writing my narrative, I began with writing a list of any possible topics and broke them down one by one from there. Once I found the topic I began to write yet another list of things that happened during this event and time . I found that writing about it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

Free Read- One Day 3

This week in my book there were not many big events that took place but a few little ones that are beginning to lead up to a big one coming later. I am starting to be able to relate a little to the book because it is starting to seem like real life events that are happening and it is stuff that you would hear about in your daily life.

The pages go by slow but there is alot of information on each page so you have to make sure that you are focused in on what you are reading or you will find yourself having to reread the page or even the chapter. When reading I have to make sure that I am tuned in to what i am reading and not distracted by things going on around me.

Comment Response

   Dr. D,
You told me that my In Defense Of Sleeping post needed to be more through so I decided to go back and go into more detail on it.

Teens tend to not get enough sleep each night therefore they are not as awake and alert at school the next day as they should be. The main cause of this is that teens usually dont go to sleep until between 10:30 and 1:30 every night. That adds up to only 5-7 hours of sleep a night and 20-35 hours a week instead of the normal needed 9 hours a night 45 hours a week time.

The main cause of teens going to bed so late is procrastination. Teens usually wait until the last minute to do homework assignments and end up staying up late to finish them. This causes stress and fatigue to the student. Athletics also push back time that the student gets started on homework each night. After homework is finished most teens tend to stay up and listen to music or text friends. Cellphones are one of the main causes of why teens dont get enough sleep because they go to bed so late. Once you hit the pillow to finally get some sleep your brain doesnt have enough time to turn off for rest from the time you go to sleep to the time you wake up, therefore you dont get a solid nights rest.

Free Read- One Day 2

This week the book is starting to speed up a little and starting to get to the point a little more. It is a really slow read so the page to time ratio is really low. While reading I was thinking about how I could relate events in the book to real life events that I have experienced. Also I tried to think about the things that are important and put the not so important details to the side.

Motivating me to read and finding time to do it is hard after school so I try and get alot of my reading minutes done in class but sometimes it makes it hard because I'm not fully paying attention to what I'm reading so I have to reread alot of the pages. As the book starts to speed up more and more I think the reading will become easier.

Hurricane Break

During the hurricane I lost power at my house until Saturday night so I went to my babysitters house to spend the night and my sister, my babysitter, her roommate, and I watched the season finale of "Friends". My sister is in love with that show and watches it ever night and was dying to see the finale so we agreed to watch it with her.

I am not the biggest fan of Friends because my sister watches it 24/7 but this episode was so much better than the rest so while I was watching it I didn't realize that my sister was being extra quite so at the end I looked over at her and she was tearing up, I said "Carson are you crying?" and she said "yes", and the next thing I knew she was rolling around on the floor crying because Friends was over. It was so funny, but what makes it even funnier is that the show actually ended like 5 years ago, she just rewatched EVERY single one of them again. It was a pretty funny moment during the break.

Free Reading- One Day

My book is starting off slow and there is alot going on so it is hard to keep up so when reading I have to focus really hard about what is going on and analyze the situation and put different parts together to make sense of it all.

While reading I think about past events that have happened and it helps me understand what is going on in the current event. It tends to jump from person to person and their story so I have keep track on who is saying what.

In Defense Of Sleeping

Teens now tend to not get enough sleep and are not rested enough for their endeavors the next day.  Teens tend to go to sleep later than they should to get the needed 9 hours of sleep a night. After school activities, homework, and friends are all contributors to this problem.

When kids get home from school, the typical teenager would go and sit on the couch and not start homework till later that night, but kids who participate in sports get home later and do the same thing so they get started even later. When you dont get enough sleep it makes it hard to participate in class the next day.

A Stolen Life by: Jaycee Dugard

This summer I read a book called "A Stolen Life" by Jaycee Dugard. This book is an autobiography about Jaycee and how she was abducted at age 11 and held captive in the backyard of convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido for 18 years.

This book left a spot on my heart and in my mind because it was such a touching and real event. One day she was walking down the street and moments later she was in the back of a car with two strangers not knowing she wouldn't see her family for almost 20 years. As the years passed, Jaycee talks about how she felt while in the backyard, being able to see the outside world, but them not being able to see her; feeling almost invisible. At ages 14  and 16, Jaycee became the mother of two beautiful girls with Phillip as the father. She writes that they are the best thing that ever happened to her and that she wouldn't trade them for the world.

What makes Jaycee's case unique is that Phillip being a convicted sex offender, he was on parole. His parole officer and other law enforcement officers had visited the property and hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Jaycee just watching from behind closed doors felt helpless and trapped. On August 26, 2009 Jaycee was then returned to her family after being identified when she went to Phillip's parole office with him and the rest of the "family". After 18 years she was then allowed to speak her own name and was free to raise her children on her own.

Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years in jail, and his wife Nancy, who also took part in the kidnapping, was sentenced from 36 years to life.

Some call it camp, I call it paradise.

This summer I went to camp in Tuxedo, North Carolina for 5 weeks. The camp is called Green Cove and this was my sixth summer there. The first 5 years I went I was there for only 3 weeks and had a blast, but always came home wanting more! I had begged and begged my mom to let me go for the 5 week session, but she would always tell me that she would miss me too much and that she wanted me to go for only 3. Once I aged out for 3 week at 13 years old, I asked her for the last time if I could go for 5 weeks and she finally said yes!

One of my best friends Olivia and I had been going to camp together for the past 5 years and we decided to go together again. We applied for camp, got our plane tickets and we were off. We arrived at the entrance road of the camp and I was full of excitement! I jumped out of the car and ran to friends from years past and counselors that I had missed so much. I got my cabin placement and I was thrilled to find that my counselor was one that I had gotten really close to the year before! I ran to the cabin, set up my stuff, told my mom goodbye, and in that moment it hit me; I am finally here, finally at main camp!

As the session went by I was having a blast! I had gone on two 3 day biking trips, one climbing trip, and countless paddling trips. Olivia and I worked for 4 hard days to pass our tandem landings and in the end it was worth it. We went on a 3 day paddling trip on the Chatooga River in Tennessee, paddled the Tuckaseegee River, the Green River, and the Natahalla. All our hard work had payed off!

People say that camp is not for everyone, but I know that it is for me!
