170 minutes: lord of the flies, chapter 5-8

reading focus

my reading focus is loss of innocence. I think that there are many ways you can look at this. you can look at it in the way of them growing up, or in the way of their actions almost going from being innocent and civil, to becoming savage.

the loss of innocence that i have been noticing it them becoming more savage. they are changing from being proper boys to become savage children that live on an island alone. they are having to grow up and fast.

in the begging of the book, the boys try and kill a pig but get scared. i think this is loss of innocence because they had never thought of killing an animal before and now thats the only thing they can do to survive. another way they are loosing their innocence is how they treat each other. at first they were all nice to one another and now they are hurting each other physically and mentally.

Major Units Of Study

i think that major units of study so far have included alot about literacy narratives, short stories, literary analysis, and lord of the flies.

we learned about many things that have to do with all of the things put together like writing tips and literary elements. We have also focused on how to become better writers. I find that the skills in this class are skills that we will use for the rest of our lives and they are good skills to have.

books i have read this semester

lord of the flies
one day
a stolen life

i have learned that i really like autobiography books more than other genres. i find them interesting and read them faster than other genres. I already knew but still agree that i am not a very passionate reader and dont really enjoy reading all that much. as much as i wish i did, i do not.

by the end of next semester, i would like to have read at lease 5-7 books. for me this would be a great accomplishment. i want to look at other genres and not run away from books because they look long and scary. I want to read a book that i once thought was long and scary so i can prove to myself that i can do and read anything i put my mind to.

reading focus tracker

chapter 2 page 38: "like kids" he said scornfully, "acting like a crowd of kids"- important because piggy is calling the group a bunch of kids but he himself is a kid too

chapter 5 page 92: "who cares what you believe in fatty", "i got the conch"- important because when they first got to the island, the boys respected the rules and followed them closely, but now they dont care about the rules and dont follow them
